Profile: Jonathan Bockian

I am a member of the Massachusetts Bar representing clients with transactions in commercial leasing, purchase and sales, and financing, or involving preservation of historic structures and sites or conservation land. Please see the PRACTICE page for more information. I am a member of the Boston Bar Association.

I am a graduate of the Harvard Law School and received my BA cum laude from New York University, where I was elected to Phi Beta Kappa.

I have over twenty-five years experience as a real estate attorney. I opened the Law Office of Jonathan M. Bockian in 2001. For many years before that I was a partner of the firm of Lane Altman & Owens LLP (which ceased operations in 2001), and for two years served as chairman of its real estate department. Before joining Lane Altman, I was an associate at the firms of Herrick & Smith and Hale and Dorr (now WilmerHale). I served as Legislative Counsel to the Massachusetts Special Commission on State and County Buildings (the “Ward Commission”) and as Executive Director of the Massachusetts Social and Economic Opportunity Council.

I write the blog Preservation Law Digest, which reports and summarizes new decisions of US federal courts and state appellate courts affecting historic preservation, conservation of open spaces or farm preservation.

My community activities include The Mosesian Center for the Arts, where I am pro bono general counsel and served for many years as Clerk of the Board of Directors and member of the Executive Committee. From 1983 to 2015, I served as a Trustee of The Boston Home, a non-profit residential facility for people with advance MS or other progressive neurological condition. For several years, including the financial crisis of 2008, I served as chairman of The Boston Home’s investment committee, on which I continue to serve. I formerly served as member and chairman of the Watertown Zoning Board of Appeals, member of the Board of Shelter, Inc., member of the Steering Committee of Lawyers’ Clearinghouse on Affordable Housing and Homelessness, and President of the Hosmer School PTO. I have authored or co-authored several articles in continuing legal education publications on various real estate subjects.
